I bought this after reading the excellent book about Earthbound in the same series. This is nowhere near as enjoying to read, bordering on tedious. Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the point of this book and the many diversions into the author's personal life. The Earthbound book was also a bit of an autobiography but that seemed to mesh wonderfully with the game. This time it doesn't.Caveat: I haven't finished the book. Got fed up about half way through. The second half may be stunningly brilliant, but I doubt it.

If you're hoping to find new insights into Chrono Trigger or game dsign, you will be highly disappointed. The book offers is actually a critic of the game adorned with personal stories. The crtics are obvious and not even specific to Chrono Trigger, but to pretty much every RPG out there (the economics of RPGs is flawed, etc). Regarding the personal stories, they are unrelated at best and uninteresting.
Skip this book, especially as there are many excellent tomes in this series (eg., the Spelunky one).
I read this book after funding the project on Kickstarter. I read about halfway through before losing interest. I had expected something with more analysis of the gameplay and game design, rather than the meta-commentary here. People with different expectations may have a different experience.
Michael gives the book an effort, but it falls flat. The book lacks a strong theme, and the component parts (interviews, game theories, critical analysis, and personal stories) fail to form a cohesive whole. While the book is at least partly an opinion piece, some of the theories and analysis seem overly picky or lacking in support, and the autobiographical sections are tangentially related at best.
The book feels like an effort to recreate Jon Krakauer's blend of storytelling and fact-finding that makes his journalism so compelling, but ends up feeling like the overly-friendly rambling stranger at the bus stop. Chrono Trigger devotees may find some enjoyment here, and the price is certainly reasonable, but overall I did not find this to be worth my purchase.
This is the best book I've ever read on any videogame. The author artfully weaves together his own personal experiences in Japan with a very poignant review of Chrono Trigger's themes and game elements from a critical perspective. The writing is joyful, and at times it's so good it gave me shivers, or made me laugh out loud.
There's also plenty of original journalism in here, including two interviews with the translators tasked with bringing Chrono Trigger to Anglophone audiences. The author himself has clearly done his homework, frequently referencing Chrono Trigger's vast lore and fandom, and his knowledge of the Japanese language gives him insights that other Western critics might lack.
This is the kind of book you'd want to give to someone who says "video game are not art." At the very least, this book is great art, and if a videogame could inspire writing like this, then that's an amazing statement on the power of games like Chrono Trigger to stir our imaginations.

The book was a great read. There were a lot of cool facts and ideas in the book, but I do think there was a too much time spent on parallels between Chrono's world and ours.
Regardless of this, the book was excellent and I enjoyed every minute of it. I would definitely recommend it to any Chrono Trigger Fan or anyone who enjoys game history for that matter!
A witty tale about Chrono Trigger, one of my favorite Nintendo games ever. The history, the characters, and culture of the game, its creators, and the author are woven together in an interesting read.
This is a good read for anyone whines played Chrono Trigger. The book's only downside is the discussion of gender kind of bogs the book down. It's fascinating and important stuff but it runs kind of long. I do appreciate that the author counted all the NPC's by gender though- that's a lot of work. Also, more context on the actual development process would have been nice. However, the interviews with the translators of the SNES and DS versions are great! Overall, worth reading in spite of minor quibbles.
